15-Day Shine Your Light Kindness Contest

December 1st - December 15th, 2017 

Now I realize you may be asking yourself: “Uh, shouldn’t we be kind every day? Do we really need a contest for that?”

You’re right - we SHOULD be kind every day (whenever, wherever and to whomever possible). But like a lot of ‘shoulds’ and despite our best intentions (like exercising at least 30 minutes a day), it doesn’t always happen.

Kindness is a habit. And like any habit, practice makes perfect.

So, to help build your "kindness muscle" this holiday season, you are invited to join your colleagues in spending 15 days doing at least one consciously kind thing each day. We hope the act of Shining Your Light through kindness will make you feel not only kinder, but also happier and healthier - not to mention that it may just make the people around you a little more kind too! :)

Not only will you make the world a brighter place by being kind, you could also win a prize! Each person who completes the contest will be entered into a prize draw to win one of four $20 Give ‘OntheGo’ Cards (redeemable at all HHSVA Give Shops).

Acts of Kindness Ideas

Here are just a few examples of ways you can show kindness throughout the contest. This is not an exhaustive list, so feel free to get creative in practicing kindness. In order to be entered into the prize draw, you must perform at least one (1) unique act of kindness on each of the 15 days of the contest. Have fun!

  • Be a kind driver. Let someone merge in front of you during rush hour. 
  • Smile at everyone you meet today.
  • Compliment three people today.
  • Pay it forward by paying the bill for the person in line behind you at the drive in.
  • Go a day without complaining.
  • Pick up a piece of trash you find on the ground and dispose of it properly.
  • Take the stairs instead of the elevator.
  • Donate a turkey for a Thanksgiving meal.
  • Listen to a friend (or stranger) going through a challenging time.
  • Let someone go ahead of you in line.
  • Plan a day to volunteer before the end of 2016.
  • Text a family member or friend to say you’re thinking of them.
  • Write a thank you note to a colleague to tell them how much you appreciate them.
  • Donate $10 (or more!) to a charity that is meaningful to you. 
  • Leave a generous tip to your server next time you go out to eat. 
  • Donate blood and/or sign up to be an organ donor. 
  • Go through your closet and donate clothing you don’t need. 
  • Drop off a food donation at a local food bank. 
  • Cook a meal for someone. 
  • Give encouragement to a coworker who is working really hard. 
  • Spend today saying only nice things about—and to—other people. 
  • Put extra change in a parking meter that’s about to run out (or already has).
  • Call a loved one you haven’t spoken to in a while. 
  • Sit with someone who is eating alone. 
  • Write and mail a thank you note. 
  • Sincerely thank as many people as possible today.
  • Tell someone how they’ve impacted your life. 
  • Take care of a chore your partner dislikes. 
  • Sponsor a child.

Registration: Shine Your Light Kindness Contest

Please complete the form below to register for the 2017 Shine Your Light Kindness Contest at HHS. The contest will run from December 1st to the 15th. Please track your act(s) of kindness for each of the 15 days of the contest. Once the contest closes (Dec 15th), you will be reminded to complete the tracking form (which will be posted on this webpage on Dec 15th) to indicate you have successfully completed at least one act of kindness for each day of the contest. How to join and be entered to win:

In order to be entered into the prize draw, you must perform at least one (1) unique act of kindness on each of the 15 days of the contest. Check out the ideas to the right or print them off to help you get started. 


  1. You must register online (form below).
  2. You must perform at least one unique act of kindness for each day of the contest (Dec 1st - 15th, 2017). 
  3. Track your act(s) of kindness (e.g. pen and paper, calendar, note on your phone, etc.) every day so you don't forget your deeds. 
  4. Complete the contest tracking form (will be posted on this page starting Dec 15th until the Dec 22nd deadline) to be entered to win one of four $20 Give Cards.
